Justice Sam Nariman Variava was born on 8th November, 1940. He was enrolled as an Advocate of the Bombay High Court on 22nd June, 1964. He practised mainly on the Original Side of the High Court and appeared in the Bombay City Civil Court. He worked as part-time Professor of Law in the Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, Bombay. He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 21th November, 1986 and permanent Judge on 12th June, 1987.

He was appointed as a Judge of the Special Court (Trial of Offences Relating to Transaction in Securities) Act, 1992 on 10th June,1992. He was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on 25th May, 1999. He was elevated as the Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 15th March, 2000. He retired on 8th November, 2005.
